Conservation is stabilizing the environment under which archives and library materials are kept.

Preservation sometimes referred as preventive measures. It involves stabilizing the temperature, availability, light and good house keepi9ng in general. The preventive measures concerns:

Creation of environment that is conducive for paper permanence and durability. Permanence relates to chemical properties i.e. its composition (nature) while durability relates to the capacity to transmit information.

Treatment of damaged documents without damaging them more

Restrictive use of fragile documents

Provision of alternative media e.g microfilming.
